So, I'm going to leave you with some quotes on education!

The Autism Book Review and Giveaway

The Autism Book

"With clarity and compassion, Dr. Robert Sears guides the reader through the maze of autism, explaining what precautions parents can take to decrease their baby's risk, how to detect autism at the earliest possible age, and how to proceed once a diagnosis has been made. The book provides parents with a simple and clear understanding of the biomedical treatment approach that Dr. Sears has used successfully with many of his young patients. It lays out a plan for developmental, behavioral, and learning therapies; shows parents how to begin treatments without a doctor's help; presents information on vaccines and their safe use; and includes an extensive resources section."

When I saw the opportunity to get this book and review it, I jumped on it. As a future educator, I know that Autism is on the rise in America. More and more kids are being diagnosed with Autism, but we aren't sure why. I even did a project/portfolio on Autism last semester for one of my special education courses. I find Autism to be very interesting and couldn't wait to read a book about it.

This book is packed with information on Autism! It's broken up into 4 parts: Diagnosing Autism, Causes of Autism, Treating Autism, and Preventing Autism. As an education major, I know that early diagnosis of Autism is very important for the child and family. I was glad to see the first section that lists possible things that could be classic signs of Autism. These include: speech delay including echolalia, social delay, obsessions or movements of/with specific objects, and unusual response to stimuli. The book also discusses various possible tests that may be given to a child who is suspected to have Autism.

The second section involves much speculation/guess. We don't actually know what causes Autism, it's still being researched. However, I thought it was interesting to see the various theories being discussed. I'm just glad that we no longer blame it on the refrigerator mom. : )

The third part, Treating Autism, involved much more than I expected. It not only discusses therapy and the like, but nutrition and medication for children with Autism. It describes possible digestive issues a child with Autism may have and certain diet restrictions. I had no idea that Autism could effect that much of a person.

The last part, Preventing Autism was insightful. I wasn't exactly sure how to prevent Autism, since we don't know what causes it. However, Dr. Sears gives some guidelines for attempting to prevent Autism before, during, and after pregnancy. These guidelines include: Avoid Vitamin D Deficiency, Avoid Mercury, Go Green, and Limit Antibiotics. He also discusses vaccines at this point in the book (he has written an entire book on vaccines prior to this book), but I think I will leave that topic alone. Dr. Sears also includes a very handy resources chapter in this section with a list of organizations and websites for those dealing with Autism.

Overall, this is a very comprehensive and good book on Autism from a trusted doctor. I found everything to be extremely helpful and interesting. I think this is a good book to have on hand and not just for parents. It is good for anyone who comes in contact with children or who is interested in knowing about Autism.

WIN! THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED!

Cake Crytals Review

Cake Crystals
I was recently sent some yummy Cake crystals to review. Here is a little bit about cake crystals. "Our jewels are fully faceted top and bottom to give a realistic and beautifully shiny decoration. Don't be confused with other companies attempting to make a three dimensional jewel shape but really making a tear drop sugar and calling it a diamond. Ours are a true and realistic jewel shape top and bottom. Each jewel is approximately 1.3cm across in width and catch and play with the light you will not believe that they are fully edible."

I was sent a mixed bag of jewels. Upon receiving them I immediately decided I wanted to try them on a cupcake (because I love them)! Here is a picture of a chocolate cupcake with buttercream frosting and some cake crystals!

Decorated Cupcakes

Granted, it's not very elaborate or pretty. However, it sure was tasty! As you can see, I put 3 crystals on my cupcake. After trying it, I've decided that 1 crystal per cupcake would have been plenty, since the jewels last so long. I ended up spending more time eating the crystals than the cupcake! These things are a lot like yummy candy that look almost too good to eat. They really do look like little jewels!

The jewels are actually individually fruit-flavored! The clear diamond tastes like orange, the blue tastes like a blue-raspberry, the pink is like strawberry, the yellow is lemon, and the green is green apple! Doesn't that sound amazing? I'm not a fan of lemon or orange. However, my boyfriend is and he really liked them. I really enjoyed the strawberry and blue-raspberry. We ended up eating some of them like they were candy, no cake or anything with it! These are truly a unique experience!

The next time you want to try something different on your cakes, check out Cake crystals! They add color and flavor to anything! They are also very pretty!

Vegan Craft Samples Review

Vegan Craft Samples Logo
I found a great website where you can buy a Vegan Craft Samples bag! "Take some really cool hand stenciled cotton tote bags, fill them with vegan craft samples from around the world...what do you get? Vegan Sample Bags!!" I got one of the Earth Day Sample bags. It is jam packed with awesome goodies!

In case you don't know, "Veganism is a diet and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose, this includes animal testing. Vegan doesn't apply to just foods, it applies to many items many people don't even think about. The following ingredients are NOT vegan: silk, honey, goat's milk, wool, leather, sugar (unless you know it is from a non-charcoal using process), beeswax, emu oil, Coral, Bone, Leather, Pearls (genuine saltwater or freshwater - glass pearls are ok, of course), feathers, milk, butter, angora, mohair, wool, cashmere, shell, gelatin."

Here is a picture of all of the goods I got in my adorable bag!

Vegan Craft Samples

I couldn't believe they got everything to fit in the bag. I especially like these items!

Earth Day Vegan Craft Samples

I love this stained glass scrap necklace with button clasp. It even came in a handmade with cereal boxes box! I think it's awesome! It's from Palafox Studio 23!

I really like the bracelet from Starrlight Jewelry! I like how it just wraps around my wrist! It's really nice.

I think the earrings, found at Art by Susmitha, are adorable! I like the swirly-ness of them!

I'm also fond of the soy candle from Mrs. Tattooed Geek! It smells really nice and it's pretty! My mom wanted to light it as soon as I opened it, but I told her we couldn't light it yet because I had to take a picture.

I think the Pointy Paws Custom Silver Jewelry Supplies are great! I got a little bag of supplies to make my own earrings! I think that's so exciting!

These are just some of the items I received! They are all great! You can get an Earth Day Vegan Craft Samples Box featuring the products I got starting at just $15.00!

Also, profits will be given to the Carolina Pet Rescue, in honor of World Rat Day, April 4th 2010 and each bag contains 17-20 awesome vegan crafty samples!

Yoplait Greek Review and Giveaway

Yoplait Greek Logo

"With 12 grams of protein -- twice that found in leading yogurts-- new Yoplait Greek nourishes from the inside out. Available in four delicious flavors, Strawberry, Blueberry, Honey Vanilla and Plain, the brand’s newest offering has a unique thick and creamy texture with the unmatched taste expected of Yoplait."

Thanks to MyBlogSpark, I received a "Nourish Your Inner Goddess" pack that contained coupons to try the new Greek yogurt. This yogurt is thicker than the yogurt I normally eat. I tried the strawberry and thought it tasted ok. I must admit, I'm not a big fan of this type of yogurt. It was a bit too thick for me. This is something I might eat for a change of pace.

I really enjoyed the other things I received in my gift pack (pictured above). It is all very nice and comfy! This is a wonderful gift set. Thank you MyBlogSpark!

Posting Winners

As you may have noticed, I've been pretty bad at announcing winners. I apologize for that. It just got to be too much, I mean with college and all. I'm going to try to start posting winners, again. My summer starts on May 2 and I'm hoping that I'll have the time to make posts consistently (not all in one night, but spread out across the week). I also want to try to post winners. So, I've decided to share with you a bunch of winners!

The Strapped Belts Giveaway winner was comment #17!

The Nature's Gate Soap winner was Debbie.

The Carolina Pad Road Trip winner was Constance.

Venus won the Guy and Eva giveaway.

The lucky Make Your Own Candy giveaway winner was Julie.

The 3 winners of "How to Never Look Fat Again" were:

Kerrie
Susan
Debbie

All of these winners have been contacted (and some have even received their prize) already! However, I didn't want people to wonder who won what. So, there you go!

Congratulations winners! If you haven't won yet, keep entering! I hope to post another giveaway either tomorrow or Friday!

Cup-A-Cake Cupcake Container Review

Cup-A-Cake

As you should know, I LOVE cupcakes! However, they are not easy to transport (say from home to college). So, I was very excited when I discovered Cup-A-Cake, the original cupcake container! "This unique container will hold a muffin or frosted cupcake in place with prongs positioned in such a way that the muffin or cupcake will not move within the container if jiggled or turned upside down."

I received 2 Cup-A-Cake containers to review! They are very cute! I really like the assortment of colors! There's a color for everyone! I also like that it has the prongs that hold the cupcake in place. The containers stay shut, but aren't hard to open. I really like these!

If you're a cupcake fan, like I am, I know you'll need these someday! They are perfect for packing in a lunch or taking a cupcake home from a party! Check out Cup-A-Cake today!

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Bathroom Scrubber Review and Giveaway

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Bath Scrubber
If you are like me, I hate cleaning. I especially dread cleaning the bathroom. "Finally help has arrived with the Mr. Clean® Magic Eraser Bathroom Scrubber, 30 percent larger and more durable with Febreze fresh scent and a soap scum eliminating solution.

Simply wet it, squeeze out excess water, and then gently rub the scrubber on the surface to remove tough dirt and grime. No fumes, gloves, buckets, or additional cleaning solutions, soaps or cleansers are required."

I was sent the scrubber to try. I was pleased with the size of the scrubber. I also liked the scent. Here is a picture of my tub before using the scrubber (yes, it's disgusting, it hadn't been cleaned in a while).

Dirty Bathtub

As you can see, it was pretty dirty. It did take some elbow grease to clean it, I'm not going to lie. It was not the easiest thing ever. I had to use both of the scrubbers to clean the whole tub. However, I'm pleased with the results. Here is an after picture.

Clean Bathtub

It looks much cleaner and smells way better! The whole bathroom smelled nice after I used it! It's a great alternative to sprays and gloves!

Cupcake Maker Review and Giveaway

Babycakes Cupcake Maker

When I first visited the Select Brands website, I was immediately infatuated with their Babycakes Cupcake Maker! I knew I had to have one and I was very excited to receive one to review!

It is very easy to use! You don't have to heat it up (unlike a big scary oven) or spray it (like a regular pan). You just pour in the batter (of cake or muffins or anything else really) and let it bake for a few minutes. Here is a picture of my chocolate cupcakes as they are baking.

Cupcake Maker

As you can see, I made a little bit of a mess when I was putting the batter in the holes (which turned out to be ok). I was pleasantly surprised when the cupcakes came out of the maker so easily. I used a spoon to scoop them up. Here is a picture of the cupcakes after I removed from the maker (they look a little funny because I kept poking them to check and see if they were done. Hehe!).

Mini Chocolate Cupcakes

This is a wonderful cupcake maker. It even came with a decorating bag and tips! Here is a picture of my first attempt at using a decorating bag with tips!

Chocolate Cupcake

I think I did a pretty good job for it being my first time! Although, in my household it doesn't really matter what it looks like. All that matters is that it tastes good. Let me tell you, these were delicious!

The cupcake maker is also very easy to clean. I just wiped it with a damp towel and the crumbs came right off! This is a very nice cupcake maker and I can't wait to use it again! I might try making muffins sometime! I also like it because it makes mini cupcakes that are just the right size! I also like that I got it in pink! It's so cute! I love it!

Daisy Rock Guitars Merchandise Review and Giveaway

Daisy Rock Guitars Logo

Well, I haven't posted a review/giveaway in a few days. So, I'm excited to bring my readers a new one. This one is from Daisy Rock! "Daisy Rock is doing whatever it takes to help girls play guitar and enjoy music." Daisy Rock is known as the Girl Guitar Company. They make beautiful guitars and merchandise. I received some lovely girly rock apparel to review.

I picked out this cute zip-up hoodie! I got this because I love hoodies and it's simple. It's just black and pink. Not a lot of frills, which is the way I like my hoodies. I like my hoodies to be multi-use pieces.

It fits rather snugly, but nice. I guess it just depends how you like your hoodies to fit. Some people like them to be baggy, others prefer form-fitting. Given my overall size, it fits me more closely. I really like it.

Black Hoodie

I also picked out a pretty tee. I picked it because it's a color I don't wear very often. However, in person, the shirt looks more maroon then it does here. I'm sorry I don't have a picture of it. I wore it over the weekend (at home) and now I'm at college without it. Even thought it's not as purple as I thought it would be, it's still a really pretty color that I don't wear often.

Flat Iron Experts Hot Tools Curling Iron Review

I recently received a curling iron from the Flat Iron Experts where you can get a hair straightener or a curling iron! I was sent the Hot Tool Curling Iron. Some of its wonderful features include:

* Patented Pulse Technology® for Gets Hot. Stays Hot performance
* Variable heat settings with built-in rheostat control up to 430 degrees
* Fast heat up
* Soft-Grip textured handle
* Powerful spring clamp
* Extra-high heat
* 24K gold - plated barrel
* Heavy-duty long-life heating element

I was really impressed with the handle. I really like the soft-grip. It makes the handling and turning of the curling iron easier. I also like that you can adjust the heat settings. It's not just the typical low, medium, high heat settings. It's really nice.

I also appreciate the safety stand. I like how you can fold it down to get it out of the way or leave it up to place on a surface while it heats. Although, it doesn't take long for it the heat up! Here are some pictures of my hair after I curled it!

I liked this next picture because I thought the little curls in the back were cute!

Hot Tools 1 Inch Curling Iron

My only complaint is that the curls didn't stay in my hair very long. I didn't have any hairspray on hand at the time, or I would have used it. I also didn't turn the heat all way the up. All in all, a very good curling iron.

Innoncence Lost: John Christopher and Child Abuse Prevention

John Christopher picture

Since I'm an education major, I felt the need to tell my readers about this important cause. As you may know April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. In support of the cause The National Children's Alliance, The C.A.R.E. Center (Child Abuse Response and Evaluation), Inc., and singer/songwriter John Christopher have teamed up and produced a song, Innocence Lost, in honor of those affected by this issue. The song is available to download at the Innocence Lost website. The National Children's Alliance and the C.A.R.E center will receive 100% of the song proceeds.

The song costs only $1.29! Can't we all give just $1.29 to this wonderful cause? Besides, the song is very touching and beautiful!

Disclaimer: I did receive a free download of the song. However, I was not required to write anything about it. No other compensation was received. The opinions expressed are my own.

Quotes of the Week

I know that many people participate in Wordless Wednesday by sharing pictures. I love pictures and I love looking at those posts. However, I really love quotes (I always have). So, I've decided I want to try something. I'm going to pick a quote (or a few) that I think applies to this week or that I like. If I get a good response, I'll continue doing it.

I originally thought of this because it's getting near the end of the semester and it's beautiful outside. I really need some motivation to do some end of the semester papers and make it through finals. So, I started looking at quotes. Here are two quotes I picked for this week!

"I don't wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work."

~Pearl S. Buck

"I love deadlines. Especially the whooshing sound they make as they pass by."

~Douglas Adams

Strapped Belts Fused Glass Jewelry Review and Giveaway

Strapped Belts Logo
I discovered a very unique product to introduce Laughing Lindsay readers to. It's from a website called Strapped Belts! "Artist John Frechette began working with glass as part of an introductory fused glass class and quickly found a passion for working with the material and discovering its transformative qualities when heated. What started as one class has now grown into a full line of handmade fused glass jewelry and accessories, such as cufflink sets, and even housewares! John Frechette believes in providing high quality products and services to keep his customers happy."

I received this lovely belt from him! I think it's beautiful! I love that it has 2 shades of blue. The belts are a nice way to add some color to an outfit. It's also more fun than the usual belt! I really like the selection of belts. John even makes team belts! All of them look so good. My belt is very nice. Both the glass buckle and black strap are of high quality.

MollaSpace Unique Designer Products Review

MollaSpace Logo

MollaSpace is a Los Angeles based design collective, a platform for designers worldwide to showcase their talent and provide unique designer products. I just love the assortment of unique products they carry! They all look awesome and would be great for any college student (or person).

For this review I received an eraser+ing eraser that comes in 5 pretty colors. MollaSpace Eraser-ing Eraser picture I got the yellow one. It fits my pinky (I have fat fingers). I think it's adorable. I think it's perfect for me because I'm an education major and I might be able to use this in my classroom in the future! I also like that as you erase, you create your own unique shaped ring! Here is a picture of me wearing it!

I also got a Trash Mug Mini which is available in 6 colors. I got the pink! I like this item because it is a good size for a desk. This will work great for a dorm room or a teacher's desk! I like how you can store candy in the top part and then put the wrapper in the bottom part. They also carry a bigger version of this! Here is a picture of my trash mug mini! Finally, I received the Pin-Up Frame in white. This frame can be pinned, taped or hung on almost any type of surface you can imagine. It also comes in black, white, and clear! I like this frame because it comes with same colored pins to put up the frame. I also like that it isn't heavy or bulky (unlike many picture frames). It was lighter that I had expected. You can barely tell there's anything in the box when you get it. This works well for a dorm room or a house!

Make Your Own Chocolate Kit Giveaway

Make Your Own Chocolate Kit

I recently received a great kit from the makers of Glee Gum! Glee Gum is all-natural, gluten-free chewing gum with no artificial coloring, flavoring, sweeteners nor preservatives. I have tried their gum and it tastes wonderful! Glee Gum also has various Make Your Own Candy Kits. Available in Make Your Own Chocolate, Make Your Own Chewing Gum, and Make Your Own Gummies, these activity kits are all-natural, educational, and eco-friendly. With pre-packaged ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions, everyone aged 8 and up gets a real kick out of making candy from scratch. Focusing on the history behind and the origin of these candies, each kit is designed to captivate your interest, connect you to the global community, and create something yummy to eat in the process!

I picked the Make Your Own Chocolate Kit to review! It comes with everything you need to make yummy chocolate at home! It's also pretty easy to make. You just melt, combine, heat, cool, wait, refrigerate, and eat! The toughest part for me was the waiting. I had a little trouble with the temperature indicator. I never could get it to turn green. However, I just waited 15 minutes and finished the chocolate.

The kit suggests putting something in the cups so that you can have a yummy inside. I did put peanut butter in some of the cups (I love pb cups)! I must admit, I made a mess putting the chocolate in the cups. However, I tend to do that. Here are some pictures of my chocolate cups!

Don't they look great! I really liked them! The chocolate is sweet and yummy! I really liked them with peanut butter! I was very impressed with this kit. I know that most of the time a kit doesn't actually produce a good tasting product. However, this kit makes great chocolate! Yay!

I also think the Glee Guy is cute! He even has his own Glee Guy Facebook profile! Isn't that adorable?
